Geeni is basically a Wal-Mart rebrand of Tuya smart home equipment. So instead of using the actual Geeni app I just used the Smart Life app and figured Home Assistant would add it to my devices like the plugs I already have with the Tuya integration.

However, doorbells aren’t officially supported by the Tuya integration and the information in the Smart Life app wasn’t helping either. It didn’t even give me the internal IP address. It only contained the external IP address of my modem.

It took a some digging to find the resources I needed and piece it together. So I figured I’d share the process in case anyone else was looking to do something similar.

Find the IP Address

I used Net Analyzer (for iOS) but you can use WireShark or even the list of devices on your router. I just went through the list of unknown IP addresses

Login to Web UI

The next step is to login to the web based user interface. The first thing you need to do is navigate back to the video stream. For me that meant clicking on the Video Camera icon on the tabs at the top of the screen. I then right-clicked the center of the video and selected "Inspect" since I was using Chrome. The section of code that is highlighted should be what you're looking for. For me this was the format I found:

http://[Device IP Address]:8099/cgi-bin/videostream.cgi&user=[Username]&pwd[Password]

So just copy that URL to your clipboard and you're ready for the next step. I also saved it into the documentation I keep for ALL my Home Assistant Integrations

Use MJPEG Integration

Now we just add the stream URL to the MJPEG integration in Home Assistant and we will be ready to go!

Method 1 - Automated

If you are on the same network as your Home Assistant instance then you can just go to the web page for the MJPEG integration and click the <a class="my badge" href="https://my.home-assistant.io/redirect/config_flow_start?domain=mjpeg" style="background-color: whitesmoke; box-sizing: border-box; color: #049cdb; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; outline: 0px;" target="_blank"> button.

Follow the directions to be navigated to Home Assistant webpage or mobile app

Enter a unique name you want to use for the camera

Paste the URL you copied earlier into the line labelled MJPEG URL

Click Submit

Method 2 - Manual

Open your Home Assistant instance (via webpage or app)

Navigate to Settings... Devices & Services... Click the blue "+ Add Integration" button at the bottom right of the window.

Enter a unique name you want to use for the camera

Paste the URL you copied earlier into the line labelled MJPEG URL

Click Submit

Then you can just search for that device by name and add it to whichever dashboard you want. I just searched the devices list, clicked on the device to open its page and then clicked "Add To Dashboard" and used the default entity (picture-entity).

Good luck automators!

Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-86791770093450225032019-03-21T21:34:00.004-04:002019-03-21T21:34:44.468-04:00R+F Expenses (How To)<span style="font-family: "roboto" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.1px; white-space: pre-wrap;">This is a tutorial o<span style="font-family: "roboto" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.1px; white-space: pre-wrap;">n how to setup an R+F<span style="font-family: "roboto" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.1px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> Expenses tracker. I could have swore my cousin Foo had one on her blog. Instead I found one on her Pintrest board called Grilled Ginger Sesame Chicken Salad. I really only liked the chicken recipe. So I took it and made it with some rice.

I wasn't able to find all the ingredients at our no frills type grocery store. I'm going have to plan ever further ahead to try new recipes so I have the chance to go to a store with a wider selection.

The items with strike through I didn't have or didn't use.

1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce

<strike>3 tablespoons fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped</strike>

3 tablespoons canola oil

2 tablespoons hoisin sauce

<strike>1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil</strike>

2 teaspoons sriracha

1 teaspoon salt

2 chicken breasts

<strike>1/4 cup red wine vinegar</strike>

1/4 cup scallions, minced

I put it in a ziplock bag with 5 breasts in the fridge for a couple hours. When on the grill it turned out like this:

My wife liked it and so did my toddler (though it was heavily dipped in BBQ sauce). I'm certainly going to make this again. Next time I will get the sesame oil or use sesame seeds, score the breasts before putting them in the bag, and of course let it marinade for longer (like overnight).

This was last weeks meal plan. I'm feeling lazy and taking a week off meal planning. But this way I can tell you (mostly) how last week went.

Since last week my wife was on the late shift our family wasn't walking through the door until 6 pm. So it was a slow cooker week.

Monday - Lasagna
This is a staple on the late shift. Lasagna is one of my all time favourite meals and translates fairly well to the slow cooker. I finally got ricotta cheese to go in and made the cheese mixture the way it's supposed to be made. To be honest it wasn't very good. Some foods should NEVER be used in a slow cooker recipe. Softer cheeses like ricotta should never be in a slow cooker.

My final tip for this recipe is to make sure you leave sauce on the top layer and NOT cheese. It will burn around the edges.

Tuesday - Chicken Pot Pie
This recipe was a total miss. I let the chicken cook in the mixture instead of cooking it beforehand like I normally. I think I'll do it again in the future. But the cream of chicken soup went weird. And no crust made this dish a flop. I need to look for a new one or make a real pot pie ahead of time and just heat it up.

Wednesday - Whirly Twirly Pizza
We wound up switching nights along the way and had this on Tuesday because my wife had a staff meeting. So my daughter and I went straight home. But being home by myself I wanted something super easy I can heat up while my daughter is in the other room.

Big time kudos to my cousin Foo for brining this recipe to my attention. I love it and (once I figured out how to cook it properly) so does my wife & daughter. I'd like to get better at making the dough thinner before rolling up the log. It always seems so thick once its cooked.

The only issue I have with this recipe is that my usual grocery store (Food Basics) doesn't carry the raw pizza dough in a bag so I need to make a special trip to No Frills one day during the week.

Thursday - Shepherds Pie II
We didn't make this one and I'm not sure why.

Friday - Herb Orzo & Sausage Sautée w Roasted Red Peppers
We didn't make this one because we went to Swiss Chalet for dinner instead. I plan to make it Tuesday this week instead.Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-10314312803238671412013-04-23T18:58:00.001-04:002013-04-23T18:58:14.711-04:00Meal Plan - April 22-26My cousin started blogging about food a while back. So far I've found it an awesome source of new recipes to try and motivation to do meal planning.

Here is this week:

Monday - Chicken Vermicelli Stir Fry
I just boiled the pasta and chicken the night before. Then the night of some frozen veggies in a wok with water and a lid. After a while I threw in the chicken, pasta, and stir fry sauce. It came out pretty good and I have left over pasta & chicken for the weekend.

Tuesday - Taco Salad
We love this and so does my daughter! We just take all the fixings for tacos (shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, crumbled whole wheat corn chips, shredded cheese, sour cream, and found beef with taco seasoning), put it in a bowl, mix it up, and serve it. Not nearly as messy as real tacos but just as filling.

Wednesday - English Muffin Pizzas
I'm going to be away so this will be an easy dinner to prepare. I think they are planning on doing chopped kolbasa & pineapple.

Thursday - Leftover Pasta
I made a LOT of pasta the other week. So we put it in the freezer for nights like this when we need something quick because I'll still be away.

Friday - Pork Chops
Not sure what yet. Prolly a mushroom soup & rice bake since I'll not have much time to prep the night before.Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-21830842078702381342013-03-08T09:07:00.000-05:002013-03-08T09:07:19.434-05:00Skillet LasagnaLately I've been trying new recipes in an effort to expand my repertoire as a cook as well as to find healthier options for my family to eat.

With our toddler in daycare and my wife's shift changing week to week we normally have a limited amount of time to eat dinner by the time we get home. So most of my recipes have been for slow cookers.

But this week she was on the early shift so I was able to try some recipes that take slightly longer to make. We had tacos that I'm thinking I'll try as a taco salad instead (since they fall apart in UR hands anyways).

Last night I wound up trying the recipe for Skillet Lasagna that my cousin had posted a month or so ago. For the first time in I don't know how long I actually followed the recipe without changing or substituting ingredients (aside from adding some spices for flavour).

It turned out NOTHING like the picture I saw. I think I was supposed to leave the lid off while it simmered because it wound up being VERY watery. After leaving it in the skillet during dinner and dishes afterward the noodles absorbed most of the juices and was much better.

Perhaps next time I'll try this on the weekend and/or with the lid off. We like our pasta. So I refuse to give up on a different method of cooking one of my all time favourite meals.Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-11253736244777892092013-02-02T21:59:00.001-05:002013-02-02T22:02:40.490-05:00Twirly Whirly PizzaSo I tried this recipe posted by my cousin on her blog (http://foolovesfood.blogspot.ca/2012/12/whirly-twirly-pizza.html). It didn't turn out exactly as planned. But I did like the overall idea of it. It just needs some tweaking.

First off, I used regular flour for the counter instead of cornmeal. But I liked the tip of using olive oil on my fingers to keep the dough from sticking. So I put it on the knife when when I cut the log and it worked out pretty good. I also used regular pasta sauce instead of "pizza sauce".

For ingredients, I used finely chopped bell peppers and shredded sandwich ham. When I put the logs sections in the dish I covered them with the chunks of ingredients that fell out when I rolled the log. Then I put extra sauce and cheese on top.

I put it in the oven and after cleaning up for a few minutes I put on the timer for 15 minutes. When the timer went off I just turned off the oven and let it sit there for about 10 minutes while got ready for dinner.

The bummer part is it didn't cook all the way through. :( it's probably because I cooked it in a corningware casserole dish instead of a glass one. It only cooked around the edges. Which thankfully wound up being enough for each of us to have a full serving. So while we ate I put it back in the oven at 350 for another 20 minutes.

I like the way it fills the dish I used. So next time I'm going to skip topping it with more sauce and cheese (it wound up being too cheesy). I'll add some baby spinach (or some other green). I'll prolly drop the temp to 350-375 and doubling the time to 40 minutes. Because what came out the oven the second time was really good.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-73044511961351830882013-01-24T21:39:00.003-05:002013-01-24T21:53:23.402-05:00Grilled Not-So-Cajun Ranch PastaSo my cousin Foo has her own blog where she posts about meal plans, various recipes, and how they turned out. This past week she posted a meal plan that included a recipe for Chicken Cajun Ranch Pasta. I liked the sound of it and have been looking for some new chicken recipes to use on a regular basis.

As usual I changed things to fit what I had on hand and prefer. The words <strike>struck out</strike> are what I didn't use and the words in bold are the additions or changes.

Chicken Marinade
Now that I have a handful of recipes under my belt for slow & regular cooking I've been slacking off and just rotating them out. Tomorrow is that story again. We had a busy weekend without a chance to do groceries.

Thankfully I plan ahead for this. Whenever I see a Marc Angelo pork roast on sale I buy it and throw it in the freezer. So today I pulled it out to defrost at noon and we stopped by Sobeys on the way home so I could grab some potatoes.

Ingredients:
5 medium new potatoes
2 large carrots
3 cups of waters
1 package of Beef Bouillon

Chopped potatoes & carrots about the size & thickness of my thumb. Placed the roast on top. Mixed water & bouillon and poured over the veggies.

I set the slow cooker on low for 5 hours.

On my last post I said that I had found my largest cache container yet and possibly ever. Well I was wrong. Two weeks ago I had some time to kill before the appointment at the garage for my cars scheduled maintenance so I decided to grab a nearby cache that was on my to do list. It wound up being a shed in someone's backyard (yes a shed!). There is even a wooden trunk dedicated to travel bugs and signature items. After a few minutes of letting me discover the bountiful cache one of the people who lived there came out and we talked for a bit before i had to leave. I even got a container I plan to use for a new hide. Saweeet!

Well a few days ago Geocaching.com sent out an email to members saying that they are discontinuing Challenges. Challenges had been their answer to replacing virtual caches where instead of going somewhere to sign a logbook you are 'challenged' to go somewhere and DO something. I had accepted a few challenges since signing up for geocaching.com but had never actually done one.

When I had to go to a nearby town for work yesterday I decided to leave a little bit early and do some caches over my lunch hour beforehand. The cool part was that one the caches I had picked was also the site of a waymark AND challenge. w00t w00t! Now I can kill THREE birds with one stone. Well, technically log three different finds with one smartphone and one location. But who is splitting hairs? (you'll get that joke later on).

The cache is near the site of a mill 125 years ago. The miller decided it was a shame to waste the energy of the water flowing out of the mills turbine. So downstream he built a tower where water twisted the turbine under the tower, a series of gears and shafts spun a large sheave [shEEv] near the peaked roof. Like a giant laundry line with a cable looped around two wheels, water power was transferred from the small tower to the main mill. What makes this site even MORE unique is that it's one of the only surviving examples of auxiliary water power still standing. Now that's a cool waymark!

I think the creator of the challenge thought it was pronounced [shAve] instead of [shEEv] because the challenge read:

Stand in front of the Tower and take a picture of you cutting someone's hair with either clippers or scissors and then upload the picture. No need to actually fully shave, but would be a bonus for sure!

Well I didn't have someone else or scissors with me. So, not to split hairs (get it now?) I just took a picture of myself pretending to cut my hair with my fingers.

The cache itself was about 40 ft downstream. I had a bit of a tumble on the way there due to frozen moss on the path (note to self... frozen moss is S-L-I-P-P-E-R-Y). But it was well worth it for a find at this kind of location. I dropped one of my signature items, signed the log, took some pictures of the tower for the logs and went on my way.

The rest of the day was a couple simple caches (an LPC) and a DNF on the final of a multi (the way to find the coords for the final was well done). All in all it was a good day of caching. I'll leave you with a few more pictures of the tower and a short (I mean SHORT) video of the water running under the bridge.
The wife was off scrapbooking with a friend and the little one was spending the day with my mom. I had a HUGE list of caches I wanted to tackle but precious time to find them. the day wound up being far from what I had planned but much more.

Biggest Container Yet (Ever?)

I had made a Pocket Query a few days beforehand. So I loaded it into my iPhone and off I went. However, I forgot to check on the recent logs of the caches. Or else I would have known that many of the caches of the one series I was interested in were in somewhat disrepair. Oh well, there are plenty of caches on my 'To Do' list.

So after dropping the little one off with Grammy I whipped out the iPhone, loaded up the GC.com app, and did a search for nearby caches. Up came 'Sticking Around For The Beer'. Yup, sounds like a good cache to start the day off. It was a nice and easy walk into a suburban park and (aside from the familiar feeling of pine needles on my skin) was a nice start to the day.

Very Clever Hide

Next up were some caches in the Caching Migraine series. You see (up-to-this-point) I logged my one and only FTF (First-To-Find) on #2 in the series. So I've wanted to try some more and show that it wasn't just a fluke. This is when I found out that many of the caches in the series are in need of some maintenance. I'm not about to spend a rare day of caching hunting for hides that may not even be there. The 2 caches I did find in the series were worthy of their name. It was nice to check a couple of them off my list.

By now I was getting close to that triple digit number and I could almost taste it. But I needed a couple more so I went for cache known to be rather large. Judging from the maps I thought it was just on the outskirts of a sports field. However, it proved to be quite the trek through bush with many trails going this way & that. When I finally arrived at GZ I was slightly disappointed that part of cache that made it interesting (other than it's size) had been disabled :( On the way back to my car I realized that I had parked about 10 metres from another cache. And despite being out in the open it had me scratching my head for a few minutes.

Caching Down Memory Lane

With 97 finds I started to head towards my goal cache. On the way I grabbed a cache beside one of my favourite burger joints and met another cacher while I was there. I then grabbed a cache from my high school stomping grounds. Then I headed off to the goal cache.

I had been here once before and had left only slightly stumped because I had forgotten the tools I had known I'd needed. This time I didn't leave anything to chance. But the cache was right behind a persons backyard, with a low fence, and a muggle relaxing on a lawn chair DOH! This is going to take some stealth.

Armed with a multitool I made my way to cache in a semi crouch style walk. I carefully released the cache from its resting place. All the while watching the muggle to ensure I don't draw any attention. Once in hand I dash back to the car. A clever cache indeed! I signed log and carefully put it back. Not before taking some photos for personal reference.

I wound up grabbing one final cache before going to have dinner with the family. A great ending to a great day!

So about 2 weeks ago I first posted (see post here) about this website called If This Then That (iftt.com). I've now had some time to play with it and I have a few uses for it. But it could be really useful for business professionals or artists. Basically anyone connected to more than 1 social network could benefit from this. Even just for the sake of archiving things.

The way the site works is by connecting your various accounts across the internet. Then, using a simple If-Then statement (called a 'Recipe') you "put the internet to work for you" (the websites slogan). By simple I mean SIMPLE:

Step 1:

Once you've created an account, click the Create button at the top. To create the first part of your Recipe click the this in the ifthisthenthat logo.

Step 2:

Select from the list of channels you've activated (coloured) to create the trigger. This is where you set the action that will trigger a recipe. It can be that you published a new blog post, recieved a new type of email, have a new follower on twitter, etc

Step 3:
Now you need to click the that part of the logo and then the channel you want it to affect. For example, I've selected my trigger to be when I publish a new post on my Blogger account.

Step 4:
This is the part where you tell the recipe what to do with the trigger. Do you want to announce your new post on Twitter with a shortened url? Do you want to post a link to it on Facebook? Do you want to email it to a group of people? Do you want to create a backup copy in Google Drive?

Step 5:
Write a description (so you know what it does) and then press Create Recipe.

I think the best use of this website is for people who use Twitter and Facebook. There are even some work-arounds to connect your Google Plus account. But it can be as simple as getting a text message before you leave for work to take your umbrella because it's supposed to rain.Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-75443817385083866342012-09-26T11:14:00.000-04:002012-09-26T11:14:00.734-04:00iPod Touch Resurrection (In Progress)Over the past few years I've come to appreciate the quality that comes with an Apple product. Especially when my wife and I bought each other a 32 GB iPod Touch 3G for Christmas/Birthday a couple years ago. In fact, when it came time to buy a new family cell phone 6 months later I decided to go with an iPhone because I knew it would one less new technology I would have to teach my wife.

Well a couple days ago my 15 month old daughter was walking around the house listening to her favourite music, The Gigglebellies, when followed my wife into the bathroom and threw my iPod in the toilet. AHHHHHHHHHH!

I was only a few steps behind her but not quick enough to keep my iPod from being fully submerged. I scoop it out quickly, towel it dry, power it off, and shove it in a ziplock bag full of rice. Everything said wait a full 24 hours but after 16 hrs I figured I was safe. So I pulled out my iPod pressed the home button (nothing). Pressed the power button (nothing). pressed and held the power button (still nothing). No!!!!!!!!!

Still hopeful, I plugged it into a USB charger and after a few minutes I heard the familar ping of an iPod coming back to life. Woooohoooo! But my celebration was short lived. Because after 5 hours of charging it still only showed the smallest charge it could possibly have.

I finally began to accept that my iPod is no more. That I'd be stuck with only 8 GB of music at a time with my old iPod Nano. But the next day I decided to plug it in overnight to see what would happen. low & behold it came back (kindof)!

I had to do a full restore to factory settings on my wife's netbook (because the stupid wireless card in my desktop doesn't see any networks). So I downloaded the latest iOS for my iPod (5.1.1), loaded up the apps my wife had on her laptop, hit sync, and went to bed.

When I woke up this morning it looked ready to go. But not exactly:

The power button doesn't seem to work. It won't turn it on or off. I have to plug it into a computer to power the device on.

The headphones level indicator is superimposed over everything until I press the down volume button

I can't even send the eror messages to Apple because the wifi and bluetooth options are greyed out under settings

I've tried reseting the network settings. I even selected to reset ALL the settings. It comes back on but with the exact same issues. I'm going to try another restore tonight. Maybe even a backup from my desktop. If all else fails I'm going to try a local shop that does iPod/iPhone repairs.Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-78402396845710522872012-09-14T11:50:00.001-04:002012-09-14T11:53:20.856-04:00If This Then ThatSo in my trawling across the Internet I found this website that can be used as a powerful tool: ifttt.com

Using a simple if-then statement you can connect yourself across social media seamlessly, simplify your life, and many more things.

In fact, when I publish this blog post it will automatically create a Facebook status with a link to the post. It could just as easily post it on Twitter or backup a copy to your Google Drive.

Let's see if it works *crosses fingers*Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-10909467583822519352012-04-16T14:14:00.001-04:002012-04-16T14:18:51.067-04:00Gambling For CacheSo if you check my finds lately you'll notice I've been working on a poker themed series of caches in a small town near where I work. Well today I've finished the caches in the series and plan to do the final in under a week.

I've enjoyed this series for a couple reasons:

1. Minimal Bushwacking - this means I was able to work on it on my lunch (which has been most of my caching to date). Plus I'm traipsing burrs or anything else back into the office.

2. Size Small - as a mostly urban cacher I've learnt to endure the tiny bison tubes and itsy-bitsy-nanos. But I like the odd Tupperware container now and again. This whole series are small sized containers with a regular size for the final.

3. Butterflies - while finishing the last cache I needed for the series I wound up walking through a field of butterflies. It was awesome! I didn't take any pictures because all I had was my iPhone.

It's these type of experiences that i think are going to keep me geocaching for a while yet because, let's face it, I wouldn't have had this experience otherwise.Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-58036446838628492082012-04-10T22:14:00.000-04:002012-04-10T22:14:05.259-04:00Some 'Dam Good' cachingAbout 2 weeks ago I got my new Magellan ToughCase in the mail. I had been having issues with my dinosaur of a GPSr (Garmin eTrex Legend) and wanted something that would do the job but not cost me a fortune. With the ToughCase I can now take my iPod Touch (or iPhone 3G) out geocaching! It's a bit finicky they way it needs to be charged. But they have taken care of the issues with working at walking speeds. Not mention it has a tough and waterproof case.

I took it out for a lunch time cache run and it was AWESOME! It was reading 7-10 meter accuracy and zeroing at GZ. I did 2 cachers that lunch hour and a handful more with it since. I even placed my first hide using it to get the coordinates.

No Dam Good
Today I went back to take some pictures of the second cache I did that day. Because in all the excitement I forgot my camera at home. Now my iPhone was in the car but it was COLD out! I was lucky I even grabbed that 2nd cache. I was on my way back to work when I pulled over because I remembered looking at the Geocaching.com map and that there was a cache near by. I pulled out my iPod Touch app and sure enough 150 m away!

Despite being a stones throw away from a major highway the location is rather picturesque. It was a nice easy stroll to GZ. Once there I just had to duck a few branches. When I grabbed the container I was surprised to pull out an ammo can! I was surprised because ammo cans aren't very common in Canada (a small military means minimal amounts of army surplus.. besides Tupperware is cheaper!) and because the description had mentioned a first aid kit container.

The description also advised cachers to take the extra few steps and check out the now defunct dam. I'm glad I did. There were concrete walls diverting the water where the dam had been dismantled. A few parts still remain. When I went back today to take the pictures I forgot to take last time I discovered that someone has been working hard at restoring the dam. Or rather, something. As you can teel from these pictures it appears that there is a beaver in the area who is busy building a dam on it's own. So what used to be 'No Dam Good' is now 'New Dam Good'.

Today marks my 50th geocache find. I know it's not a huge number considering the fact that I started 7 months ago. But starting a new outdoor hobby at the same time as having a young baby and winter soon after that can slow one down.

I know that other geocachers tend to pick a memorable cache to do for their milestones. Mine? It was just a step up from a park and grab near a carpool parking lot (GCPD8T). I chose this cache because it was hidden by a cacher in Ontario with the 2nd most finds:

I figured what better way to mark s small numbers milestone than by finding a cache hidden by someone lits TONS of them. Who knows, maybe some of the geocaching skills will transfer on to me. I know I know! But a man can dream!

On my way to making my 50th find I placed my first hide. I just filled out the submission form. So check back and I'll update this post when it's approved. It's nothing fancy. Just a quick P&G (park & grab). But I thought the location was interesting.

In the next few months I plan to place many more caches. As a matter of fact, I'm currently planning a series of caches. So stay tuned to my blog posts with the geocaching label.

My first hide has now been published. It's called 'Telemarketing' because there is a phone booth (a rarity these days) with all sorts of advertising stickers all over the doors. Sadly it only has 1 find so far. Around here once the FTF frenzy has cooled off people take their time to grab a new hide. I think the D1/T1 rating puts people off too. I might bump the difficulty up to a 1.5.
Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com1Milton, ON, Canada43.5182991 -79.877404243.3340716 -80.1932612 43.7025266 -79.5615472tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-56009960053260581382012-03-10T11:16:00.000-05:002012-03-10T11:16:40.203-05:00How To Convert A MuggleThose who follow me know that I started caching by following the posts my buddy Dave made about caching with his family.

As I've been getting more and more into the game, sport and obsession known as Geocaching (shout out to HeadHardHat) I've been telling all my co-workers about it.

Bit by bit one of my coworkers has been asking more and more questions about it. He was thinking his boys would like it.

Last week we popped out on lunch to grab a cache. Despite coming up with a DNF he was hooked. In fact, he went back later that night with his son and DID find it. Despite being sick, after signing the log he turned to his dad and dripping with anticipation asked "Are there any more?"

Hooked.

In fact, even his wife was saying "Pick me up after work so we can grab the one just around the corner". I even had him signing up for a Premium Membership the same day he logged his 2nd find.

So far we've gone on a second lunch time cache run. But the scary part for me is that I think very soon he's going to surpass me in finds.

I can hardly wait until my daughter gets older and we will be caching all the time.Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com1Ontario St N, Milton, ON L9T, Canada43.5182991 -79.877404243.1488896 -80.5091182 43.8877086 -79.2456902tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-76404843493067317322012-02-16T15:32:00.004-05:002012-02-16T15:32:54.211-05:00PUNK'D - Work EditionSo today my unit had to go to another work site for a meeting about a specific file. Afterwards, we had a second informal meeting with the local unit, who belong to the same department as my unit.

Part way through the meeting someone popped into the room to let us know about some brownies & ice cream cake in the lunch room that were free for the taking. Myself and couple others heeded the invitation and each grabbed a couple brownies and a slice of cake. After the meeting broke we then went to Boston Pizza because it was now lunch time and after lunch we all went back to our respective locations.

When I got back to the office I went to hang up my coat. But I decided to check the pockets first to make sure I didn’t forget anything later. When I reached into my right pocket I felt something a little heavy and wrapped in paper towel.

“Weird” I thought, “ I don’t remember putting any paper into my pocket”. I pull it out to look at it and I see that something is wrapped inside. I unroll it to find what at first glimpse looks like a piece of turd! But I quickly realized it’s just a bunch of brownies (note the chunks of walnut) mushed together and molded into that shape of one.

After a few minutes of whodunnit discussions, a couple accusations and insane laughter I finally found out who the pranksters were and gave them a well deserved kudos on a prank well played.Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com1Milton, ON, Canada43.5182991 -79.877404243.3340716 -80.1932612 43.7025266 -79.5615472tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-2832696701919716582012-02-09T21:16:00.002-05:002012-02-09T21:16:49.290-05:00The Urban CacheSo far I've been doing mostly urban caches, which means mostly micros & nanos. There are the usual suspects: light pole skirts and traffic sign magnetics. I like the ones that are a little more inventive.

I also recently signed up for a premium membership. The idea was to make planning caches along a roadtrip easier. But I also get to sign up for email notifications of newly hid caches. Mainly because I'm eager to get a FTF (First To Find) under my belt.

I was online this morning making a bookmark list for an upcoming day trip when I noticed this cache. "Hmm" I thought, "I don't remember seeing a cache in that parking lot before".

But it wasn't until I was on a completely fruitless cache run on my lunch break that I saw the email notification of a new cache. Woo hoo, I can get my first FTF. So I open the Geocaching.com app on my iPhone and load the cache. DOH! It's already been found.

But I had some banking to do after work so I swung by and figured I'd give it a shot. I got out of my car and saw a guy walking around patting everywhere and holding a GPSr in his hand. Wooohoo, my first bump in with a fellow geocacher in the wild.

We fumbled around for a few minutes before Big Zee made the find but was kind enough to offer me first to sign. We traded stories for a lil while before we each made our way home after an afterwork cache.
Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com1Milton, ON, Canada43.5182991 -79.877404243.3340716 -80.1932612 43.7025266 -79.5615472tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-37737010192829446592011-12-30T21:48:00.001-05:002011-12-31T13:43:25.948-05:00New YearsNew Year's is a little extra special for me. I guess it's because it's my birthday. That's probably why I've never really bought into the hype of New Years Eve.

I'd rather focus on the fact that people all over the world celebrate my birthday (an international holiday). Ha ha.

I've also never really been into making resolutions either. Okay, I've never really kept any of my resolutions.

We call them resolutions... goals... whatever... but this year I have 2 of them:

1) Get & Stay Physical - Yeah, I know! Everyone says that. But with a new baby girl I want to healthy enough to enjoy life with her for many years to come. Plus, this year I have a motivation: Geocaching. The hard is going to be the same as it always is: finding time in the daily grind to do it.

2) Fellowship - Between visiting family at least once a month, having a new baby, & sometimes just not feeling well we've missed a lot of Sundays at church and Small Group on Tuesdays all together the past 6 months. This can't go on. We need to find a way to get connected again to our faith community.
Typical Google product, it's fairly intuitive and actually has a similar interface to the G+ app.

So far I have 3 suggestions:

1) The switching between blogs should be the main screen not a setting under options.

2) Labels should should be a drop menu of previous labels sorted by most frequently used.

3) It took you long enough. Really? Your just launching an Apple app now?

(Geocache)Today I decided to tackle a geocache that is within walking distance from my work. I really need to get motivated with going out for walks/geocaches and I think this cache is going to do the trick.

From reading the logs previously I knew this cache was in rough shape. A lot of people have mentioned that the container is cracked and that the log is soaked. Since the Cache Owner (CO) hasn't been out to fix it in some time I had planned to throw together a replacement container at work. But with some very pathetic options I decided it best to check the cache out first and then buy a suitable container.

So I grabbed a pencil, some sheets of lined paper, a grocery bag (didn't have any Ziplocs), my iPhone (with Geocaching.com app) and my my iPod. Jamming out to some tunes I made my way to and down the path that led towards the cache. But once I reached the end of the path it looked like I was going to have to cross creek 6 feet across and 2 or 3 deep. I knew it was wet & muddy out but I wasn't prepared for THIS!

I took a minute to boot up the iPhone app and see where I was in relation to GZ and spotted thinner and more shallow end of the creek to cross. It took some balancing on rocks and ducking under some branches but I made it across safe, sound, and DRY!

About 10-12 feet from the creek I met up with the original path and continued towards GZ. When I got to GZ I knew I had to push past a couple trees to get to the search area. Despite being an overcast day the view was still quite nice. I had to wiggle around a ledge. But once on the ledge the cache was easy to spot.

I pulled it the lock-n-lock out from the rocks it was half hidden under to find the other cachers had not been exaggerating. It was busted up good: cracks in the lid, a hole in the bottom and (of course) a soaked log book. I took out my paper and logged the find on them. I was going to put the paper inside the grocery bag to keep it dry but there was a toy inside a plastic bag. SWEEEET!

The walk back to work was much nicer because after crossing the creek I had noticed another path that seemed to lead back to the road without crossing ANY water. Although I emerged with muddy boots and mucked up the back of my pants with mud spatter I'd have to say this has been my best caching experience yet.

Along with logging the cache I messaged the owner about helping out with container AND log maintenance. My plan is to 'adopt' the cache. This way I'll have a reason to get out for walks on my lunch hour more often.

(#14)
Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1826952408199256990.post-43787487673939805972011-11-07T12:03:00.001-05:002011-11-07T12:04:02.819-05:00MapsUp until a few months ago I only ever used Yahoo, MapQuest, & Google for my mapping needs. In fact, I got rid of all my old paper maps years ago. Why bother when you can just download the map you need & print it off? And with smart phones now you have the maps with you. That's one of the main reasons I never bought a GPS unit for my car. I figure why bother whn I have a map function built into my iPhone?

But ever since buying my Garmin eTrex Legend GPS for going geocaching I've realized there are many more map options out there for different purposes. The Geocaching.com website and iPhone app have different options for different types of maps.

Street Maps
Just what you think they'd be: maps of streets. However, different websites provide different details and different levels of accuracy. I find Yahoo & MapQuest to be more accurate with where an address is located on a street. But I find Google has more recently created streets. This time the Geocaching website & app chose to use Bing, Google and OpenStreetMap.org (OSM). OSM is an open source mapping system.

Sateliette Maps
Sateliette maps are actual images of the area taken at different levels of magnification. Depending on the website or service you use depends on how recent the images are and their level of magnification. The Geocaching website and app use Bing, Google, & Google Hybrid (Google Street Maps overlaying the satelitte images). Since I don't need extreme detail or recent images I use these free versions too.

Topographic Maps
When hiking, camping, or doing anything outdoors it's always helpful to know ahead of time a lay of the land. You need to know when there are sudden or gradual changes in elevation or the type of terrain you'll be going through. Topographic maps use lines to show you changes in elevation. So the closer together the lines the steeper the terrain. This time the website and app use OpenCycleMap.org (OCM). OCM is also an open source mapping website. However, this one is geared (hahaha!) towards cyclists because with topographic maps they can know how many hills are on their planned route, how big they are and how steep they are. Of course, it also comes in handy for hikers and geocachers.

So far I've been talking about free mapping solutions. However, there are many proprietary mapping solutions too. A perfect example of this are maps for GPS units. Most GPS units come preloaded with a set of basic maps. Depending on the manufacturer, model, and purpose you can upgrade your maps for free or for a fee.

Well the base map on my Garmin eTrex legend unit is basic. I mean so basic it only shows MAJOR highways. I looked up the cost of the highway maps for the Garmin maps North America and they are being sold for about $100. That's more than I even paid for my GPS unit. So I started looking up ways I could upgrade my maps for free.

In my searching I came across a page on the OSM wiki page about creating your own maps in Garmin format from OSM exports. I was able to download the image tiles I wanted (thanks to OSM user computerteddy). Then using the command line program CGSMapper SendMap Pro I was able to create a Garmin compatible IMG file.

But when I tried to use the SendMap tool to actually send it to my GPS unit it wouldn't work! I think it's because the tool is looking for a USB connection instead of a Serial connection (which is what my unit uses). So I'm going to dig out my USB-Serial converter to see if that works. I also noticed that one of the pages mentioned that I need to change the connection mode my GPS is using. But there is no USB or Serial mode! Grrrr!!

Anyone know what I'm missing? Or is this just an impossibility with my model of GPS unit?Duffmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07712788877436845046noreply@blogger.com3
